📖 What is a Panchangam?
A Panchangam (పంచాంగం) is the traditional Hindu almanac based on five key elements of Vedic astrology. The word "Pancha" means five and "Anga" means limb — referring to the five essential aspects:
- Tithi (తిథి) — Lunar day; the angular relationship between the Sun and Moon
- Varam (వారం) — Day of the week as per Hindu calendar
- Nakshatram (నక్షత్రం) — Lunar mansion / star constellation of the Moon
- Yogam (యోగం) — Combined longitude of Sun and Moon
- Karanam (కరణం) — Half of a Tithi
Panchangam is consulted for choosing auspicious dates (muhurtams), daily rituals, fasts (vratams), and festivals — it forms the backbone of Hindu religious and cultural life.
